(A Merger of Dale Kennedy Partnership & Powell Alport Partnership)

A new firm of architects and project managers was launched on April 1st in Cardiff, building on the strong reputation and almost 90 years of combined experience of two well known names in architecture - the Dale Kennedy Partnership and the Powell Alport Partnership.

The new venture has been established by partners Simon Kennedy, Derek James (both DKP) and Gareth and Ceri Griffiths with a total staff of 14. The companies have long enjoyed a close relationship, and the new combined offering will continue to offer a holistic approach to design, producing the best results for both client and the environment (See Western Mail Press clipping).

Simon Kennedy says: "We have always had mutual respect for each other, and this seams an appropriate time to combine our complementary skills of design expertise and commercial strength to create a suitably sized practice with the resources and flexibility to handle the larger projects, yet small enough to provide personal attention."

Ceri Griffiths adds: "The market is increasingly buoyant and with Objective One funding starting to have an impact in Wales we have a lot of business on the books."

Derek James has been a partner at DKP for 14 years and says: "The strength of both companies fit well together to set up a professional practice with an exciting vision for the future."

The Powell Alport Partnership was founded in Cardiff in 1952 and is one of the oldest established architectural practices in Wales.

From its earliest years the practice has played a major role in the regeneration of industry in Wales and has assisted in attracting major inward investors, particularly in the 'sunrise' electronic industries and sectors.

Notwithstanding its particular expertise in the industrial sector, the practice has traditionally had a wide and varied client list, such as Shell and BP, for whom the practice has acted in the petroleum and chemical sectors, and has carried out such landmark projects as the Medicentre at the University Hospital of Wales, the Technium Centre in Swansea, and the BA Training Facility at Treforest.

Ten years younger, the Dale Kennedy Partnership's design portfolio includes the rapidly expanding Cardiff Gate Business Park where new headquarters of the Julian Hodge Bank and the International Baccalaureat Organisation will soon come on stream.

Further Welsh credits include Cardiff's award winning Fizalan Court; projects for the University of Wales College, Newport; the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff; the University of Glamorgan, and a number of international project including Es Mirall - a major leisure and retail complex in Mallorca, and projects on St. Kitts and Antigua in the Caribbean.

Founder Dale Kennedy will maintain a consultancy role at KJG.
